Finding the best AeroPress Grind Size

If you're new to the AeroPress game, figuring out the right AeroPress grind size can be daunting. But don't worry; this guide will help you quickly and easily find the best grind size for your AeroPress. Let's explore why—when it comes to coffee grinds—size matters.

What is grind size?

First, let's talk about what grind size means. Grind size refers to how coarse or fine the coffee grounds are after the coffee is ground. Different grinders are available, but most people use either a blade or a burr grinder. A blade grinder cuts the coffee beans into small pieces, whereas a burr grinder crushes the beans between two surfaces to produce a more consistent grind. Burr grinders are generally considered the superior option for achieving a consistent and even grind.

The search for perfect grind size

Some general guidelines can help you find the right grind size for your AeroPress. Here are a few things to consider:

  1. Taste and experiment: The best way to tell if you are grinding and brewing your coffee well is to taste it. Everyone has different tastes, and part of the fun of coffee is finding out what you like.
  2. Start with a healthy starting point: We suggest starting with a medium-fine grind, similar to table salt, and seeing whether you need to grind more coarse or finer from there.

A good rule of thumb is that the more coarse the grind, the more sour the coffee tastes, whereas the finer the grind, the more bitter it can taste. So if you're finding it too acidic, try grinding finer. If it's too bitter, you can improve the taste by making your grind more coarse.

Improving your coffee consistency

Figuring out your taste and using a consistent method is critical to consistently achieving a great cup of coffee. You can do a few small things to improve your coffee consistency significantly. Try some of these:

  1. Use a burr grinder: As mentioned earlier, burr grinders are generally considered the superior option for achieving a consistent grind. If you're serious about finding the perfect grind size for your AeroPress, investing in a burr grinder is a good idea.
  2. Get some fresh beans: Like anything organic, coffee changes in flavor over time. Coffee can get stale and dull as it gets exposed to air and further from the roast date. So try grinding up the freshest beans you can find!
  3. Adjust based on the type of coffee: Different types of coffee require different grind sizes. For example, darker roasts tend to be more brittle and require a coarser grind, while lighter roasts require a finer grind.
  4. Consider the brewing method: The best grind size for AeroPress can also depend on the style of AeroPress you're brewing. For example, if you're using the inverted method, a finer grind size may work better.

The best grind size for your AeroPress

The best AeroPress coffee grind size, in our opinion, has a consistency similar to table salt. Some people refer to this grind size as medium-fine. Think about getting the size to somewhere between coarse sea salt and granulated sugar. Of course, you can adjust from there, but we find this to be the best starting point.
